Free concert to praise diversity
The survival of Aboriginal culture will be celebrated in an explosion of dance and music on the Perth Esplanade.
Organisers of the Survival 2003 Indigenous Cultural Festival do not deny that their concert - timed to coincide with
Australia Day - makes a strong political comment. The free concert from 11am to 6pm will provide an
alternative celebration which is sympathetic to the country's cultural diversity and recognises the survival of the
Aboriginal community since white settlement. It wil have a focus on spirituality, culture and empowerment and includes music,
song and dance, workshops, photography and art exhibitions.
It attracted an audience of 8000 last year.
Participants in the fourth annual event are also eager to share
their strong, proud and lasting culture with the wider community in a fun and entertaining atmosphere.
"We are trying to make something positive out of it," event coordinator
David Chesson said at the launch of the festival this week.
"We have to embrace all the different cultures and come
together as one." Performers at the concert will represent both
traditional and modern aspects of indigenous culture.
James Webb, whose dance troupe has performed across the globe,
said the festival was particularly relevant in urban areas.
For Black Pearl Modelling director Diana Jackson-O'-Brien, the event is a chance to use fashion and beauty to raise awareness
and challenge the stereotype of Aboriginal people.
