Australian Aboriginal Culture & Didgeridoo News and Articles:
Allan Moarywaalla Barker Senior
(12/04/1942 05/12/2003)
From the Wirraka Maya Health Service Committee and staff:
Condolences to Alf Barker and family on the loss of our friend, comrade and martyr. Black Allan was easy to get on
with, highly sophisticated, full of twists and turns. We had much to loose, for many he gave us a voice, a sense of togetherness,
if not with extended family and community, then with our stolen land and history.
In the words taken from the story of Aboriginal
Country music... From Port Hedland, Black Allen or Moarywalla, was a country bluesman (the only aboriginal man to play solo acoustic blues),
who in the sixties became a doyen of the East coast coffee house circuit, a sort of self-styled Australian. Big Bill Broonzy.
Black Allan went on to become a stipel of the early seventies hippie, the freak Aboriginal bluesman who actually at one time a president
of Greenpeace. In 1985 he was part of the first group to start the West-Australian green Party. However, despite his professionalism,
not to mention talent, he was ignored. In 1983 he finally recorded an album: the brilliant very original "Fire Burning".
His smile and untamed sense of humour will be missed by all !
I first met darling Nabaru in 1971 in Sydney when a small group of us started an organisation in Australia
called Greenpeace. Nabaru gave the whole protest indigenous validity and we became Greenpeace 4.
It felt like us against the world in our non-violent battle against the destruction of the planet or the harm
of her inhabitants. And so we became very close friends through thick and thin and many sometimes dangerous situations.
I was honoured he called me his sister.
He saved my life. I think he saved many lives with his great wit and often, naughty humour, and has certainly
surprised and taught many whitefella lots about lots, especially how to have a good laugh and look at themselves.
Always a true Greenie.
His strenghts and courage were infinite. His passion, love and fire unequalled in his never-ending quest
to do only for the good and happiness of his people. All people.
He was an innovator and before his time and that his life very hard at times because he was often not understood by
black or white and caused many problems in his life, but he always bounced back with as much love and passion as ever.
He will always be in my heart.
Greenpeace.
